I’m a fierce advocate for early career physician well-being in particular and healthcare worker wellness at large.
Physician life in the first seven years after training is challenging. Doctors are not just launching their medical careers but also their lives outside of medicine.
They have unique challenges.
That requires unique support.
And - the worst part is they mostly have to project that they have neither challenges nor need support so they are viewed as being “competent” “worthy” or “strong”.
In a recent interview with Dr. Jillian Rigert, DMD, MD at a Life True to You, YouTube channel, I publicly accepted how I needed help as a young attending and how I had to overcome my perfectionistic demons to take that step towards asking for help.
This conversation is an attempt to normalize and destigmatize asking for help at any stage of your career- yes even in the first few days.
This conversation is for all early career physicians to know that you matter, that you have more agency than you realize, and that many physicians-including myself are here to support you.
